Issam was the friend I always relied on for a cheesy joke, for a great meal, for a night cap, for an escape out of the city when Beirut got too oppressive. He was a friend long before he became a colleague – but getting to know Issam the journalist was a privilege of its own. He was always learning and always teaching – incredibly experienced but equally humble, generously offering his time and knowledge to younger colleagues, constantly ordering some new camera gadget to try out. He was, and remains, an example for us all.

Issam Abdallah was not just a talented photojournalist he was my best friend and a brother I found on the field. We met while I was working as a cameraman for Al Jazeera English, and from that moment, our bond was unbreakable. Issam had an unparalleled passion for telling stories through his lens, capturing moments of both beauty and tragedy with courage and compassion. His life was tragically cut short in an Israeli attack in South Lebanon, but his legacy as a fearless journalist and a kind soul will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

He was genuine—a true human being—and a funny one too
Issam was known for his in-depth storytelling that focused on the human experience rather than just current events; like recounting the tale of a cat stranded in Ukraine during the war, or describing a mother who woke from a coma after the August 4 blast in Beirut. He was genuine—a true human being—and a funny one too. Whether it was a late dinner, early coverage of street protests, a drink at 10:00 pm, or a midnight drive to the airport to cover a story in the region, Issam was always ready. These happy memories help ease the pain of our separation, though I can’t deny that I miss Issam dearly.
